Understanding kitsch is necessary to understand what it means to be human. What is universal about kitsch is that we can’t escape from it. Some kitsch can be awesome to witness, but most of it isn’t. Other people will even give up their lives in the name of defending their country’s kitsch. Some people dedicate their lives to creating kitsch. There’s nothing inherently wrong with kitsch, and I think it’s perfectly fine to seek enjoyment of kitsch so long as we acknowledge it for what it is. However, perhaps it was Kundera who provided the best explanation, as applied to theme parks as well as the larger political world he was concerned with, when he wrote that “kitsch is the inability to admit that shit exists”. ![]() Nobody cries over bad art, but many people will shed a tear in the presence of great kitsch. What is “kitsch”, anyway? Kitsch might be defined by some as cheap and/or derivative art, although I prefer to identify it by its function: kitsch is a work of art that, when you encounter it, you are automatically conditioned to know how you are supposed to feel and respond to it. Yet, loath though I might be from that revelation, every year I willfully pilgrimage to a number of theme parks, permanently piqued by some indescribable appeal these pleasure places have over me. Whether I like to admit it or not, theme parks are rarely anything other than complete kitsch. Also, would Radiator Springs Racers be considered a roller coaster? I think it's more like a thrill ride.“No matter how much we scorn it, kitsch is an integral part of the human condition.” This quote from Czech author Milan Kundera fairly well summarizes my relationship to theme parks in general. Also, I am not a fan of inversions, so i have not ridden California Screamin'. and despite this list, I am not from California, I live on the coast though. I have been to others parks, namely Knotts berry Farm. Techinic Project X (Legoland California). Matterhorn Bobsleds (Disney California)ĥ. Big Thunder Mountain RR (Disneyland California)Ģ. Really only those 2 and the 3 mountains at Disneyland CA (Big Thunder RR, Space, and Matterhorn.), aswell as Goofy's Sky School (Disney's California Adventure) I'd probably order them as ġ. Personally, I've not been on many roller coasters. There's also Technic Project X (I think it's only at California) Which is a Steel Wild Mouse ride. It starts out going past some life size lego models, then it goes into a large amount of helixes. Which LegoLand? I know of atleast 2 (Denmark, California) From what i understand, most the parks have a "Dragon Coaster" Which is basically the LegoLand equivelent of a Junior Coaster. I have been to Legoland long ago, which had a tiny coaster which I really enjoyed back then, but I hae no idea what it's called. You sat in an improvised bobsled/kart and got fired down a twisty steel halfpipe style track controlling all the brakes yourself! I nearly killed my sister (who had stupidly gone before me) on this ride, she was standing up after she had finished and I forgot to brake and ploughed straight through her, good times! This thing was LETHAL, I'd be surprised if it's still legally allowed. (the ride, not the park)ĥ.bobsleigh Ride? - Oakwood Adventure Park, Wales, UK. Used to go here all the time as I grew up right by the park, must have ridden it a 100 times easy, It's gone now unfortunately. The Cobra - West Midlands Safari Park, UK. ![]() could of ridden it all day if we wanted.Ĥ. Me and my mate were the only 2 people on the ride and when we came into the station there was nobody else waiting so they sent us round again. went here at the very end of the season, there were only about 50 people in the whole park all day. best hangover cure I know of.ģ.Shockwave - Drayton Manor, UK. 1=.The Pepsi Big One - Blackpool Pleasure Beach, UK.ġ=.
